wordpress logoWordPress is now the most widely used blog software available.  This is no surprise considering how many web hosting companies include WordPress as part of their hosting package.  It’s easy to install and to use.  While it is a great overall platform it does have it’s problems.  Most notably is how people are able to penetrate the platform.  But there are a few easy ways to protect your WordPress blog from intrusions.

Update to the Current Versions
The very first thing to do is to make sure that your WordPress version is the most current. Updating the software is quick and easy.  Along the same lines, you want to make sure to keep any plugins you have updated as well.

Protecting WordPress directories
The key directories that you want to protect are:
wp-content/plugins
wp-content/themes/
wp-content/uploads/

The way to protect these directories is to create a blank index.html page and upload it to each directory.  By doing this, anyone who goes directly to these pages will only see a white page. If you would like to know how to create a blank index.html page, Ehow.com has a good article about it.

Protecting WP-config.php file
Your WP-Config.php contains your database name, database username and database password. It’s something that is very important to protect.  Just add the following code to your .htaccess file:
# protect wpconfig.php
<files wp-config.php>
order allow,deny
deny from all
</files>

This is the most important WordPress file to protect.  By leaving this file vulnerable, you could potentially lose access to your blog.

These are but a few of the things that you can do to keep your blog running safely and smoothly.
