How To Tell Your SEO Is Working

There are no shortage of search engine optimization how to’s and strategies out there. From link building to content creation to influencer outreach. While the strategies and types of SEO techniques are diverse, one thing that is often not discussed is how to tell if your SEO strategy is actually working. Regardless of what marketing strategies or campaigns you are running, you want to know if it is producing results. So with this in mind, I’ll cover concepts to make sure you are always on track with your SEO.

The right expectations
Even before beginning an SEO campaign, you want to be sure to have a clear understanding that SEO is not a short term strategy. It’s designed for the long haul where you may not see results for months. Generally most SEO’s will cite it will take 6 months. But this isn’t to say that SEO’s shouldn’t be keeping you up to date on things they are working on.

Clear & realistic goals
Once you understand what it takes for SEO, then you can set the right goals. At the end of the day, the ultimate goal of SEO is to drive as much relevant traffic to the website. The key here is relevant. A good SEO will get you traffic but a great one will get you traffic that converts. So when setting your goals be sure that it aligns to the path you are going down. So if your SEO is building links, then the links should be on sites that are complementary to yours and has value. If they are building content to share, then it should be useful to your target audience.

Measure the results
Of course, what most people want is to know is if they are making money from their SEO efforts. The best way to measure this is with Google Analytics revenue tracking – Revenue tracking is not enabled by default and will require some coding but it is well worth it to know how much each online channel is producing in revenue. Especially when you engage in SEO.

You want to know where you’re headed and what it will take to get there. The first step is establishing a starting point with key metrics you want to see impacted. In most SEO campaign strategies, the focus is seeing lift in organic traffic because you are getting more visibility in search results for high valued keywords.

You should know where your website is being promoted regardless if it’s through content or link building. They don’t have to give away their ‘secret sauce’ but they should be able to tell you what sites they are working with for links or content. This provides you with validation that your SEO is sticking to white hat SEO strategies and you are getting value for the money you are spending.

When either starting or evaluating your current SEO campaigns, keep these 4 ideas in mind. This will make sure that you are on the same page with your SEO campaign and that they on the right track promoting your site.
