Small Business Inspiration From Turbo

turboJust recently my family and I went to go see the new Dreamworks animated movie Turbo. This year has been a big year for animated movies. Probably at least once a month a new animated movie comes out and we’ve seen almost every single one. But Turbo has earned a special place in my recent movie adventure. I’ll try not to give away any spoilers as I explain why this movie will always be special to me.

I’ve always been an advocate for small businesses and this movie has a powerful message that I think any small business owner can relate to. It isn’t in the small snail named Turbo but in the person he teams up with, Tito. Tito and his brother Angelo have a small local taco business that is struggling in an isolated part of town. Tito dreams of making the business a success and comes up with wild marketing ideas to make it happen. But the craziest of all is when he wants to use Turbo’s incredible speed to win the Indy 500.

What I love about this story is that both Turbo and Tito are dreamers and they have big dreams they hope to make come true. But no one believes they can achieve their dreams. The lesson here is to not give up and be creative. It can take something totally unexpected and off the wall to be a success.

If you haven’t already, I’d recommend reading
Guerrilla Marketing by Jay C. Levinson
. He provides practical advice and inspires a unique perspective to generate that creativity. A memorable anecdote from the book is about a small furniture store owner who suddenly found that 2 larger furniture stores had moved into the lot to his left and to his right. The one on the left put up a huge banner that said “Grand Opening Sale – Prices slashed 50%”. The store to his right put up a sign that said “Monster Clearance Sale – pirces slashed 75%”. But because the small furniture store owner was creative, he also put up a sign on his store that simply said “Main Entrance”.
